The human mind is far more complex than any of us can imagine and more intelligent and capable than most of us give it credit for. It has more neural connections than our universe has stars and it records billions of bits of data at any given time, all of the time. No wonder we have trouble controlling it sometimes…

So when it comes to changing problematic attitudes, beliefs, habits and behaviours ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions do not exist: some things work for some people; while other things work for others.

Which is why I use tools, techniques and strategies from a number of different psychological technologies, including those briefly outlined below.

Emotional Freedom Technique

Often referred to as “Psychological Acupressure”, Emotional Freedom Technique is an effective self-help and therapeutic modality that is easy to learn, non-invasive and pain-free.

Drawing upon various theories of alternative medicine – including Acupuncture, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Energy Medicine and Thought Field Therapy: it is ideal for use on both emotional and physical issues, as well as working with personal development, goal setting and future planning.

Matrix Reimprinting

Matrix Reimprinting is a Meridian-Based Therapy, effective for the treatment of both emotional and physical issues, as well as the more general life issues – such as relationships, career development, motivation and focus, etc…

Taking you back inside the memory of a specific event, Matrix Reimprinting provides you with the neurological tools to change your relationship to it, and by neutralising the trauma in the moment, it releases you from the negative effects of it in the present.

It works especially well with dissociated clients – those who find it hard to trust and open up, and those who are reluctant or unable to connect to the emotion attached to the trauma – and on things that have been forgotten or that are too difficult or painful to remember.

Imagineering

Similar to dream analysis, art therapy, poetry therapy and writing therapy, Imagineering is ideal for use when a physical condition has no pain or is not obviously visible.

Known for being a gentle approach, it allows an indirect and metaphorical access to the emotion locked in the symptom, providing an opportunity for the calming and clearing effects of EFT to get to work.

Sourcing visual metaphors from the unconscious mind, it translates them into meaning, which can then be understood by the conscious mind and addressed with therapy.

Meditation

Meditation is a great technique for relaxation and freedom from anxiety and stress. A state of concentrated attention on a thought, idea, aspect of God or on one’s awareness, it is a method of training the mind to become peaceful and clear from outside distractions.

The practice of meditation comes with a myriad of health benefits, including increased concentration, decreased anxiety and a general feeling of happiness.

People who meditate regularly report that they experience more enjoyment and appreciation of life and cite that their relationships with others are improved.

Guided Visualisation

Guided Visualisation is a safe and powerful technique that can be used on a wide variety of issues, both physical and mental. Similar in execution to a bedtime story, it is a simple form of Meditation that everyone can do easily and effectively, making it a great self-help and personal development tool.

With regular practice, it can help to reduce stress and anxiety, improve self-confidence and self-esteem, improve clarity of mind and develop or mature life situational coping skills.

Reiki

Reiki is a wonderfully gentle yet very powerful form of healing, administered by the laying on or over of hands. A simple, natural and safe method of body and mind self-improvement, it can be used to heal any form of illness – be it physical, emotional, mental or spiritual – and bring about improvements in a wide range of conditions, from depression and bereavement to cancer and arthritis. Reiki also works in conjunction with all other medical and therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Creative Arts Therapy

Creative Arts Therapy is a process in which you are invited express your inner world (thoughts, feelings and emotions) through pictures rather than words. Unlike traditional art-making, however, the focus is on the process rather than the end result, with scribbles and random marks being of equal if not greater importance to the final, complete images.

Creative Arts Therapy is particularly effective when feelings are too difficult to talk about and the process of unlocking the unconscious mind’s wisdom often makes verbal expression more accessible.

Yarn Therapy

Often, the meditative and creative aspects of yarn crafts can be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to coping with difficult times – be it grief, depression, change, relationship issues or that emotional slump you just haven’t been able to emerge from. In addition, talking about a problem can bring relief and bring us closer to a resolution, especially if accompanied by a professional ear.

Yarn Therapy provides a safe and nurturing environment where individuals can experience the benefits of counselling while they sit and knit. It works especially well with clients who find it hard to trust or open up and those who are reluctant or unable to connect to the emotion attached to a trauma.

Talk Therapy

We all know that talking about a problem can bring relief. Sometimes, simply sharing a problem can be all we need to fix it. Talking to a trained professional, someone who will refrain from judgment, can help you to find your own answers to problems.

You will be given a safe place to talk. You will be listened to without interruption. You will be encouraged to freely express yourself. It is an opportunity to look at your problems in a different way with someone who will respect and encourage your opinions and guide the decisions you make.

The goal is relief of symptoms, changes in behaviour leading to improved social and vocational functioning and ego strengthening.

Role Play

Role-Play refers to the changing of one’s behaviour to assume a role: either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted one.

Role-Play provides a safe and private environment through which individuals can test drive threatening or feared situations and expel unwanted emotions that are difficult to own and often the cause of deep emotional upset.

In addition, in the course of having some fun, individuals can reflect upon existing attitudes and beliefs and experiment with different ways of acting in the world in order to build self-confidence and self-awareness.
